人之初①，性②本善，
性相近，习③相远。

人在出生之时，本性都是善良的，天性也都相差
不多，只是因为后天所处的环境和所受教育的不同，
Men at their birth
Are naturally good.
Their natures are much the same;
Their habits become widely different.
If foolishly there is no teaching,
The nature will deteriorate.
The right way in teaching
Is to attach the utmost importance in thoroughness.
