理雅各与法国学者顾赛芬、德国学者卫礼贤并称"汉籍欧译三大师"，他将《四书》、《五经》等中国主要的典籍全部译出，引起西方世界轰动。他于1876年荣获法兰西学院儒莲汉籍国际翻译奖，是牛津大学首任汉学教授。1948年以后，联合国教科文组织努力促成成员国文化经典的翻译工作，《东方圣书》作为代表文集推出。理雅各是《东方圣书》系列之《中国圣书》的主要译者。理雅各英译本至今虽逾百年，但仍被认为是中国经典的标准译本，是欧美文化界深入了解中国传统文化的重要文本和凭借。 "英汉双语国学经典"丛书将中文古文、中文白话译文、英语译文，逐段对应编排，读者可以同时看到三种版本。而双页排汉语、单页排英语，又便于读者通畅无碍地对照阅读。《诗经（理雅各权威英译本）》就是这套丛书之一，由佚名著。
