Ben Wang is one of the great ambassadors for Chinese culture. As a lecturer he has entranced countless people at such institutions as Yale, Columbia, University of California Berkeley, the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, the United Nations, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Seatde Art Museum, and Museum of Fine Arts of Boston. As a translator, he received the 1988 literature translation prize from the Taiwan Literary Association for his Chinese translation of Russell Baker's Growing Up. His English translation of Kunqu Drama, Laughter and Tears, has received acclaim from publications including the New York Times.
As a teacher, he has covered Chinese and translation at Columbia University, New York University, Pace University and City University of New York. Since 1985 he has been an instructor at both the United Nations Language Program and China Institute in America, where he now serves as Senior Lecturer in Language and Humanities and is Co-Chair of the Renwen Society.
It was at China Institute that I first met Ben, when we worked together on what would become an award-winning series of children's books called We All Live in the Forbidden City. In his English translations of the texts, Ben's strict attention to the nuances of the original books resulted in sophisticated works that did nor 'dumb down' Chinese history and culture for children. Since then, as the Director of Programming at China Institute, I have had the pleasure of presenting many lecture series by Ben where he has captivated diverse audiences on masterworks ranging from Tbe Book of Songs to Tbe Peach Blossom Fan.
