远负盛名的当推被人称为“面人赵”的上海著名面塑艺术家赵阔明。赵阔明生于北京，出身贫苦，从小做过苦力、堂倌、小贩、轿夫等，平时爱好打拳、唱戏。19岁开始捏面人，25岁就与北京东城“面人汤”汤子博齐名，3 2岁在天津被人誉为“面人大王”。20世纪30年代，赵阔明到上海，结识上海民间面塑艺人潘树华，并吸收他的艺术之长，使技艺进一步提高，终成为全国著名的面塑艺术家。赵阔明的创作题材广泛，内容以传统戏剧和神话传说为主。作品人物形象逼真，面部刻画细致，衣纹简练概括，神态生动，色彩鲜艳丰富，被称为“立体的画，无声的戏”。他创作的作品有： “福禄寿三星”、“观音”、“长眉罗汉”、“五子戏弥勒”、“钟馗嫁妹”、 “关公看春秋”、“林冲”等，在国内外享有很高声誉。尤其是面塑仕女，是面人赵的“一绝”，他所制作的仕女不但体态柔美，而且服饰色彩鲜艳，轻薄透明，富有绸缎的质……。
Dough modeling in Shanghai has acentury long history. The most prestigiousdough modeling artist is Zhao Kuoming，known as "Figurine Master Zhao". Bornin a poor family in Beijing， Zhao hadworked on many odd jobs such as coolie，restaurant waiter， peddler， sedan chairbearer etc. Chinese marshal art and localopera were his hobbies. He picked updough modeling when he was nineteenyears old and became equally famousas figurine master Tang Zibo in Beijing.When he was thirty—two， he earnedhis reputation as the Figurine King inTianjin. In 1930s， Zhao went to Shanghaiwhere he got to know Pan Shuhua whowas a folk dough modeling artist. Zhaolearned from Pan his merits and skillsand improved himself and finally becamea nationally renowned dough modelingartist. Zhao's creative works cover a widerange of themes， focusing on traditionaloperas and legends. Characters depictedin his works are so vivid and lifelike.
