From the first film of New China about nationalities in Xinjiang Ha Sen and Jia Mila to the recent hot showing films True Love and Money on the Way, the films in Xinjiang has kept on developing, attracting the broad masses of audience with minority folk customs full of geographic features of Xinjiang, like shining pearls on the vast land of Xinjiang. It cannot be denied that films of ethnic topics in Xinjiang are mental and cultural products with specific and profound social and political significance, and an important spiritual force and emotional backup to safeguard the harmony and stability in Xinjiang and unite the people of all nationalities.
According to incomplete statistics, since the establishment of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1955, over 50 feature films and documentaries have been produced by domestic and foreign film institutions in Xinjiang, and they have taken the scale of Xinjiang films.
Xinjiang Tianshan Film Studio witnessed the development footprint of the films of Xinjiang. Xinjiang Film Studio was born and started its development in the mid 1950s. In 1978, the Literacy Union of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region called an enlarged meeting of all council members, deciding to restore the “China Film Association Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Branch”. Subsequently, it was officially named as Xinjiang Tianshan Film Studio, and that period was the spring for the translation and production of minority language films of Xinjiang, and Xinjiang Tianshan Film Studio produced and created many films of ethnic minorities, and by now, it has translated and produced over 3,000 films in minority languages, and created and produced over 150 feature films, coproduced films and documentaries.
The year 2009 is memorable to the filmmakers of Xinjiang, that year, Xinjiang Tianshan Film Studio held a grand victory conference, commending the film Great River and TV play Past Stories of Muqams that won the “Five ‘one’ Project” award of the eleventh session cultural and ethic development from the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, the films Great River and Mymyty in 2008 that won the 13th China Broadcasting, Film and TV grand awards “Haubiao Awards”, the film Mymyty in 2008 that won the nomination awards for best children film at the 27th China film “Gold Rooster Award” and the three main creating persons Zhang Bing, Gao Feng and Xirzat.
In Oct. 2014, the starting ceremony of a key film of Xinjiang Tianshan Film Studio as a gift to the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region —Starting Place of the Dream was held at Dabancheng District of Urumqi, this is a film based on an inland class of senior secondary students from Xinjiang, it tells a story how the students of different nationalities in the class study, live, grow up and become excellent persons in the interior area, as a vivid demonstration of the cordial care of the CPC Central Committee for the youngsters of all nationalities in Xinjiang, particularly the high attention and energetic support to the education undertaking in Xinjiang.
In recent years, with the care by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television and the CPC Committee and Government of Xinjiang, a number of films created by Xinjiang Tianshan Film Studio with topics of Xinjiang received important prizes such as “Five ‘One’ Project” of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee on ethical and cultural development, these excellent films opened the door for films on topics of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang to go global, and have been highly appreciated by many surrounding countries, playing an important and active role in publicizing Xinjiang, moulding the images of Xinjiang, and carrying on the excellent culture of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang...
Preface
On Oct. 1, 1955, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was established, opening a new chapter in the historical development of Xinjiang. The year of 2015 will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Time flies and great changes have taken place in the world. A period of 60 years is merely a short instant in the long river of history. However, to the people of all nationalities of Xinjiang, the trials and hardships during the 60 years are really a glorious chapter worth recording.
Over the 60 years, especially during the reform and opening up, the people of all nationalities of Xinjiang, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, worked hard in unity and forged ahead with determination, they have not only established new amicable ethnic relations of equality, unity and mutual assistance, but also scored great achievements in the modernization construction, making splendid progress continually.
Over 60 years in Xinjiang, its national economy has grown rapidly, with comprehensive strength substantially increasing； the construction of infrastructures has achieved rapid progress, with investment and development environment improving daily； the opening to the outside world has kept on expanding, shaping a pattern of development and opening up in all dimensions； the urban and rural markets are flourishing, and the material and cultural living standard of the people has kept on improving； science and technology and education has got satisfactory results and all social undertakings are in flourishing development； development of socialist democracy and rule of law is in full swing, and cultural and ideological progress has been further promoted… Xinjiang today is thriving and flourishing, making progress every day.
To sum up the history of development of Xinjiang over the 60 years, we specially planned this book China Xinjiang Fact and Figures in 60 Years 1955-2015. This book presents the development and changes in Xinjiang on all dimensions such as politics, economy, society, people's livelihood, culture and environmental protection over the past 60 years, as a collection of data as well as for publicity. It is also an “epitome” of the glorious history of Xinjiang in the 60 years, providing a review for readers to learn experience and build up confidence at the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is our hope that Xinjiang will make persistent efforts and create greater achievements in its future development.
