The Chinese nation has a long history as a unified entity. For thousands of years, people's minds have held universal beliefs such as the Three Sage Kings and Five Virtuous Emperors being our common ancestors, with legends and achievements about them handed down from generation to generation. The recognition of the Three Sage Kings and Five Virtuous Emperors as the common ancestors of the Chinese nation, and the belief in consanguinity and identity that all Chinese people are descendants of the Fiery Emperor and Yellow Emperor, have been reinforced through the generations. These shared sentiments are deep and indissoluble, possessing a great cohesion and affinity among the people of the Chinese nation.

The temple was first founded in the 9th year of Ming Emperor Jiajing's reign (1530), and it continued to be used up until the Qing Dynasty, with a history of over 470 years. It has become a key national site for the protection of historical relics. It is an imperial temple for performing ceremonies to commemorate the Three Sage Kings and Five Virtuous Emperors, emperors of successive dynasties, accomplished vassals and famed generals.
