宋代是中国瓷业发展的繁荣时期，瓷窑星罗棋布，遍于南北各地。从生产性质而言，有官窑与民窑之分；以地域而言，又有北方与南方之别。传世的官窑瓷器，以北京故宫博物院与台北故宫博物院收藏最丰。本卷刊出的宋代官窑瓷器数量之多、质量之精，是一般图录无法比拟的。为便于读者阅读，《两宋瓷器》共分两卷，首以南北地域划分，次以官、民窑顺序排列。上卷收北方陶瓷，如汝、钧、定、耀州、磁州等窑系的制品，并及金、辽及西夏瓷器等；下卷收南方的哥、官、越窑、龙泉窑以及景德镇、建窑等窑系的制品。
宋代民窑瓷器在中国瓷器史上占有极为重要的地位，如果说，宋代瓷坛的官窑为阳春白雪，那么，民窑即可称众彩纷呈。官窑与民窑的发展，构成了宋代瓷文化的全貌，达到了中国瓷艺美学的高峰。
