The China Population Statistical Yearbook 2002 is an annual statistical publication, which covers very comprehensive data series on the population at national level and local levels, of province, autonomous region, and municipality directly under the central government as well as main population indicators of other countries in the world.

In 2001 sample survey on population change, whole country is regarded as population and every province, autonomous region and municipality is regarded as sub-population. The sample technique of stratified, multi- stage and cluster sampling, with probability proportionate to size is applied. There are 1. 22 million persons in sample size, 896 counties (or resident groups), 3398 township ( towns or streets), 5049 village groups (or resident groups) are included in the sample of 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of whole country. From weighting tabulation, population in China in the end of 2001 is 1276. 27 millions. In 2001, the crude birth rate is 13. 38%o, and the number of birth is 17. 02 million; the crude death rate is 6. 43%o; the crude of natural increase is 6. 95%o, and the number of natural increase is 8. 84 million. The most of tabulation in the part of yearbook is sample data (except table 1-1). The sampling fraction in the whole country is 0. 963%o.

The 2000 population census covered all persons with the nationality of, and a permanent residing place in the People's Republic of China. The census took the de jure approach by which each person should be enumerated at his/her permanent residence and should be enumerated at only one place. The reference time for the census was zero hour on November 1, 2000. Data for the 2000 population census referred to the permanent population at the reference time. Unless otherwise specified, the national total population in this publication refers to the population of 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities under the central government and of the servicemen of the People's Liberation Army (as well as 1.05 million persons with their permanent residence to be decided), while the figures by province do not include the servicemen of the People's Liberation Army, nor the 1.05 million persons whose permanent residence remained to be decided. The national total figures were calculated from results of the manual tabulation. In some provinces, results of the manual tabulation on urban/rural population and on illiterate population were adjusted after they were reported to the National Census Office. Therefore, in some tables the sum of provincial figures does not add up to the national total. Data in this publication are rounded to 10 thousand, and there might be slight inconsistence due to this rounding process, which was not adjusted in compiling the publication. While the national rates and ratios were calculated directly, from the enumerated results, provincial rates and ratios were, kept in consistence with the figures as published in the provincial census communiqués.
