To the west of Tianjin city lies Liukou Town (present Yangliuqing Town, whichgained its name because poplar and willow were planted everywhere). It is famoug forits New Year Painting. The history of Yangliuqing New Year Painting can be tracedback to the reign of Emperor Wanli (1573—1620) in the Ming Dynasty, and it gainedfame in the reign of Emperor Chongzhen (1628—1644). Most of the villagers fromvillages nearby worked on Pictures Production, thus forming an old saying — "Everyfamily is good at adding details to paintings and drawing pictures." Daqing River, ZiyaRiver and South Canal all flow through Yangliuqing Town, bringing it the opportunityto become a distributing center of New Year Painting. Leading the woodcut pictures inNorth China, Yangliuqing New Year Painting, together with Suzhou Taohuawu NewYear Painting, are called "Nantaobeiliu (Yaohuawu in South China and Yangliuqing inNorth China)".
Yangliuqing Woodcut New Year Painting is unique in Tianjin's folk art becauseof its methods of wood cut overprint and handmade colored drawing.During the reignof Emperor Qianlong(1736—1795)of the Qing Dynasty(1644~1911),the paintingswere called“Wei Picture”,since Yangliuqing Town was under control of Tianjin Wei(a military organizational system). The name was then changed t0“Wei Mo Zi”duringthe reign ofEmperor Guangxu(1875—1908)ofthe Qing Dynasty, and finally re—namedas“Yangliuqing New Year Painting”.
