This book contains a cluster of English articles and speeches written by Hu Shih from about the 1920s to the early 1960s, most of which were published in the influential English publications, and had a significant impact on Chinese society at that time. According to the themes, three volumes have been compiled, namely, ""Chinese Literature and Society"", Chinese Philosophy and History of Ideas"" and ""The National Crisis and Public Diplomacy, by Zhou Zhiping, professor of East Asian Studies at Columbia University. Volume I: Chinese Literature and Society includes 29 of Hu Shihs English papers, lectures and book reviews, showing Hu Shihs thinking of reforming literature and improving society.
