Zhu Rongji, served as mayor of Shanghai from 1987 to 1991, was China's vice premier from 1991 to 1998, and served as fifth premier of the People's Republic from 1998 to 2003. Between 1993 and 1995 he served concurrently as governor of the People's Bank of China.The edition of Zhu Rongji on the Record:The Shanghai Years covers the period from December 1987 to April 1991, when Zhu served as Shanghai's deputy Party secretary, mayor, and then concurrently as Party secretary It includes 106 of his speeches, conversations, directives, and letters, along with 83 photographs and reproductions of 9 directives and letters, the great majority of which were hitherto unpublished. In his 'Speech at the First Plenary Session of the Ninth Shanghai People's Congress,' Zhu revealed some of his personal tribulations for the first time. All articles were personally reviewed by Zhu Rongji.
Zhu Rongji's tenure in Shanghai coincided with the critical period when the focus of China's economic reforms shifted from rural areas to the cities, and when the economic system itself was in transition. For various domestic and international reasons, reform, development, and stability encountered great difficulties and daunting challenges. The Shanghai Years is an important record of this unique period.
