Short-term Spoken Chinese is a series ofshort-term intensive textbooks designed primarily to develop students’ oralcommunicative competence. Suitable for short-term courses of all levels with ateaching cycle of six weeks or less, it can also be used as a textbook for oralskills courses in general further education programs and as a self-studyresource. The series comprises seven volumes across five proficiency levels: Threshold (Volume 1 & Volume 2), Elementary (Volume 1 & Volume 2), Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Advanced. What is presented to learners now isthe 4th edition of this textbook series.
Threshold is intended for zero-based learners and beginners. Itcontains 30 lessons in total. Lessons 1–5 focus on phonetics, forming aself-contained module for optional use. Lessons 6–30 are the core texts, whichalign with the most frequently used vocabulary and sentence patterns specifiedin the Elementary Level 1 and Level 2 of the Grading Standards. Theselessons cover the most basic communicative tasks in daily life, study, andother communicative activities.

Ma Jianfei is a professor and Secretary-General of the InternationalConfucian Association. He previously served as Vice President of BeijingLanguage and Culture University(BLCU), and Secretary of the Party Committee andDirector of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministryof Education. His research mainly focuses on international dissemination andmanagement of Chinese, as well as theories and methods of international Chineseeducation.
Su Yingxia is a professor and Associate Academic Dean of HainanInternational College, BLCU. She formerly held the positions of Dean of theCollege of Applied Chinese Language and Director of the Center forInternational Communication of Chinese Culture at BLCU. She was elected aDistinguished Teacher of BLCU in 2012. As a Chinese language teaching expert,she has conducted Chinese teacher training programs in many countries. Herresearch mainly focuses on teaching Chinese vocabulary and grammar to non-nativespeakers, and textbook compilation, with numerous publications to her name.
Zhai Yan, female, is a professor at BLCU. Her research mainlyfocuses on teaching methods of Chinese as a second language, languageacquisition research, and language testing research. Professor Zhai has editedor co-edited many influential Chinese textbooks, served as an expert forvarious examinations such as the Volunteer Program of the Ministry of Education’sCenter for Language Education and Cooperation and the International ChineseTeacher Certificate Exam, and has been invited to conduct Chinese teachertraining or give lectures in multiple countries.
It consists of 15 lessons in total, with each lesson taking 3 to 4 class hours.
