Regarding the current development of China, the Western regions still face significant challenges. It is widely recognized that understanding and interpreting the origins and evolution of China’s excellent traditional culture and explaining the historical inevitability of the formation and development of the Chinese national community necessitates considering Western China. It is impossible to accurately understand and interpret China as a whole without understanding and interpreting Western China. However, the development of Western China, whether in terms of its economic and social foundations or the types and nature of the difficulties it faces, differs from other regions, especially China’s central and eastern regions. We hope that the rigorous analysis and in-depth discussions reflected in these papers promote academic progress in related fields and provide useful references for the international community to understand contemporary China.
Western China Studies, an English series of books sponsored by Shaanxi Normal University, is committed to scientific and rational analysis and evaluation of the historical traditions, social foundations, resource endowments, environmental conditions, institutional constraints, and strategic choices of related issues based on the actual development of Western China. We strive to present well-supported arguments and detailed information. All discussions aim to address pressing local issues while maintaining a significant international perspective.
On the occasion of this new issue, we especially look forward to scholars at home and abroad contributing different opinions on relevant topics. We encourage discussion through the various columns, continually deepening our understanding of the experience of Western China, that is indispensable to Chinese wisdom.
