Excellent comprehensive book on Sichuan cuisine, the first in English developed by the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine and the Sichuan Gourmet Association. Includes photos of each dish. Ordering from Purple Culture was easy and shipping from China was relatively quick. I would definitely use this site again....

Conversational Chinese 301 Vol.1 (3rd English edition) - Textbook with DVD Video
Date Added: 01/26/2015 by Tony Morelli
I purchased the Conversational Chinese 301 Vol.1 (3rd English Edition) textbook and workbook several weeks ago. These are great materials for self-study. I have found even without teacher guidance the lessons are easy to navigate and I am having great success retaining the information presented. The included DVD is of numerous scenes acting out the dialogues from each chapter of the textbook, and it gives a nice method by which to ensure your pronunciations of pinyin text are correct, as well as providing a resource to help "tune" your ear to listening to both native and second-language speakers. I don't often order from anywhere online but Amazon because I am always worried about the profesionality of an unknown company. Communication with Purple Culture was easy and professional when I had questions regarding my order. Shipping was prompt and the materials I ordered were packed well. For full disclosure, and to avoid sound like a praise robot, I was briefly worried when I received an order placed message, but never received a shipping confirmation or tracking number days later. This was no problem since I was provided this information as soon as I sent an email asking. Just FYI. All in all I am a highly satisfied customer who is happily making strides learning my second language. Thanks!...

A Chinese-English Dictionary of Buddhist Terms
Date Added: 12/08/2014 by Ronan Farrell
According to the official blurb, this 470 page book: "A Chinese-English Dictionary of Buddhist Terms is comprised of more than 16,000 entries that cover terms, allusions, books, monks, relics, rituals, schisms, events, places, Buddhist materials of Mahayana (including Tibetan Buddhism and Japanese Buddhism) and Hinayana Buddhism. Every entry consists of Chinese phrase, English translation and concise Chinese explanation."

Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, and occasionally Japanese terms are also indicated where appropriate. The terms are organized alphabetically according to the Pinyin system, and in simplified Chinese characters. However, the chief shortcoming of this dictionary is the lack of Pinyin for every head character, although it is indicated for personal and place names, along with a Wade-Giles rendering. Two appendices give traditional-simplified characters and Wade-Giles-Pinyin conversion tables, which are always useful to have in one place.

The English entries are fluent, concise and accurate; the Chinese text clear and readable, making this dictionary ideal for students of Chinese Buddhist texts who cannot yet manage monolingual Chinese (or Japanese) dictionaries of Buddhism such as the Ding Fubao one.

All in all, this dictionary provides a very useful and affordable resource, compared to out of print and outdated works like those of Eitel and Soothill....

Esay Chinese Understanding Chinese II (with 1 Mp3)
Date Added: 10/20/2014 by Antonio Carlos Barbosa
This is the second volume of a very good chinese book. As its own name suggest, Easy Chinese is a very easy and self paced book to follow.

The lessons are very well formated and facilitates self learning people to quickly gain confidence on speaking mandarin. The audio files are very clear, very comprehensible and can be listened with or without the book. I suggest both!

If you're really interested in learn chinese I recomend this book as it's a fast way to get there, but don't forget to start with volume one....
