Teachers can flexibly manage the after-class exercises according to the needs of class hours.
Level: Advanced

Learning Advanced Chinese Idioms is a spoken Chinese textbook for advanced learners, which aims to help them master common idioms (also including proverbs and allegorical sayings) and the profound knowledge of Chinese culture behind them.
This textbook consists of 15 lessons, each of which includes such parts as "Warm-up", "Text", "Notes", "Examples and Explanations of Words", "Exercises", and "Communication Tips". Many main characters of different ages and personalities run through the book, and many vivid and interesting stories that happen to them make up the texts. In the parts of "Notes" and "Examples and Explanations of Words", 500 idioms are classified according to their importance and degree of difficulty, and typical examples are matched for difficult words to enhance students' understanding of how these idioms are used. Some exercises are divided into consolidation exercises and expansion ones according to the difficulty of the task. Teachers can handle them flexibly according to students' proficiency and class hours. In addition, the corresponding reference answers for exercises are very detailed, which is convenient for students to review.

About the Author

Easy Way to Learn Chinese Classical Allusions (English-Chinese)

When reading Chinese literary works, it is common to come across historical and classical allusions. A grasp of such allusions naturally makes the understanding of what one is reading much easier. By the same token, when writing prose or poetry, the apt use of such allusions does much to embellish the work. It could be said that the study of the Chinese language and the reading of literary works in Chinese is unimaginable without an understanding of historical and classical allusions.

Chinese historical and classical allusions, like English idioms, have their peculiar sources. Some have their roots in historical incidents or personages, and some in the words of notable figures. Unlike proverbs, which are commonly composed of four characters, historical and literary allusions can have as few as two characters and as many as ten or more. It is important to note that, in general, both historical and classical allusions and proverbs have both their original meanings and their extended meanings, and there are some differences between them.

The corpus of Chinese historical and classical allusions is vast, far too vast for the inclusion of them all in a volume as slim as this one. Here we have collected 81 of the most common and easily grasped allusions, with notes on their origins and meanings, and examples of the use of each allusion by Chinese authors. This volume carries on the tradition of the series Easy Way to Learn Chinese by providing such assistance for the reader as notes on the names of people and places, on the pronunciation of difficult characters and the meaning of obscure phrases. In addition, illustrations enliven the text and bring home the point of each allusion. The English version that follows the Chinese text is the work of an Englishman well versed in Chinese language and culture.

We are confident that this book will not only provide the student of the Chinese language with a knowledge of Chinese historical and literary allusions, but also well help the Chinese student of English acquire fluency in reading genuine English prose.

Level: Intermediate, Chinese Teachers (TCSL)

There are many words and expressions in Chinese that are similar in terms of pronunciation, form, meaning or usage. They are called similar words and expressions. The similarity between these words may cause problems for learners to correctly understand and use them.
This book is targeted at intermediate Chinese language learners, focusing on the common words at elementary and intermediate levels. It includes altogether 1,172 similar words and expressions falling into 544 pairs/groups, of which 830 are at the intermediate level. Each pair/group is dealt with in three sections“Similarities”, “Distinctions” and “Exercises and Answers”. First the similarities between the words/expressions in each pair/group are briefly enumerated, then the distinctions between the words/expressions in terms of meaning and usage are emphatically pointed out, supported by ample collocations and examples to help with understanding, and finally a set of blank-filling exercises are provided for reinforcement and practice. Each and every exercise is provided with an answer. The appendix includes 315 intermediate-level words and expressions in 149 pairs/groups, which are similar (or same) in form or pronunciation. For international students, these are also an important part of similar Chinese words and expressions. It helps to draw students’ attention and improve their learning efficiency by comparing these words and expressions in pairs/groups and providing their pronunciations, grammatical functions and collocations.
With its explanations and examples written in simple language, this book is suitable for intermediate Chinese language learners as well as candidates about to take the intermediate or advanced new HSK test. CFL teachers can use it as a teaching reference.

"Having been teaching Chinese as a foreign language for several years, I find this book very helpful for students to teach themselves some popular Chinese idioms in reading and writing. To learn Chinese idioms on their own-it is very good ！ "
Ma Naiqiang, Senior TCFL teacher at Beijing University
"As a westerner who taught English to Chinese students in China for about 10 years, I wish I had had this book then. Not only would I have increased my knowledge ofidiomatic Chinese; I would have learnt many fascinating details ofCI-una' s history and culture. The alphabetical order makes it easy to find the phrase you want to understand. And the 'English Equivalent' phrases would have made great teaching material for classes of Chinese students preparing to live overseas-l would have taught one at every lesson. I strongly recommend this book to both students and teachers, ofEnglish and Chinese."
Juliet Adams, ESOL and IELTS teacher in Tianjin
"Reading this book as a native speaker has immensely given me an inside look into parts ofChinese culture and language that my background as an American prohibits me from understanding. I think this book appropriately offers a simplified description ofmany ofthe phrases to help both those fluent in either English or Chinese and does a greatjob creating a bridge between the two languages and cultures. I am thoroughly impressed with the translation ofsome ofthe Chinese stories and can actually see myselfusing some of the terms myself once I gain a better understanding ofthe Chinese language. I recommend this book to English speakers attempting to learn and understand Chinese language and culture and for Chinese speakers attempting to learn English with the mindset of applying what they' re learning to an actual, verbal conversation. "

My name is Orna taub.I was born in Israel in1957. My big interesting in China and the Chinese language started after I graduated from Chinese medicine school in Israel And complemented my study in another school of Chinese medicine to study two years Chinese herbs. One of my instructors was a native Chinese doctor who came from chengdu and only spoke Chinese. The meeting with him evoked in me a sudden and great attraction to China and a big passion to learn Chinese. I started to learn Chinese by myself using textbooks. Gradually friendly relationships started to develop between me and my Chinese instructor ,and since he could only speak Chinese, I had no other choice but to break my teeth to speak Chinese with him. As I progressed in Chinese I started to help him in his everyday life communication and after a while also joined him to his patients homes to serve as a translator. Eventually I became his translator in his classes too.In the following years I continued to study by myself .After a few years I made my first trip to China and stayed in Chengdu (Sichuan province) for three months attending the Normal University and taking classes in Chinese language with other foreign students. During that time I spoke only Chinese and made great progress in my language studies. Since I came back to Israel and on I use every possible way to study Chinese and deepen my knowledge in the language. In the recent years I have taken one-on-one lessons using skype studying colloquial Chinese in advanced level with a native Chinese teacher from Beijing , practice speaking with another teacher in chengdu and directly contact with Chinese native speakers friends by speaking and writing. Recently I graduated from the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) after 8 months of studying Chinese translation (1-1 lesson by skype), and got a certificate. After years of very diligent studying I decided to make use of my long time experience as a student and share my knowledge and insights with the worldwide mandarin students.Being a long time enthusiastic student myself let me experience the problems and difficulties of the mandarin student and my wish is to share the worldwide students with my knowledge and insights gained by my own efforts to overcome the difficulties and language issues I encountered. Till now I wrote several digital books for students which may be very beneficial for students who already have a basic knowledge in mandarin Chinese. I hope the mandarin student will be benefited from my books.

The illustration involves over 600 words and expressions, for which the author goes beyond merely giving explanations to their meanings, to focus on their distribution and usage, thus making the explanation more accurate and practical. A vacancy-filling piece of work in comparative studies of Chinese as a foreign language, the book serves as a good reference book for HSK candidates and teachers alike.

On the one hand, foreigners thirst for gaining knowledge about Chinese history and culture and learning Chinese language; on the other hand, some Chinese people find it difficult to translate the Chinese proverbs properly into English when they talk with foreign friends.

This book has been compiled to solve the aforementioned problem. It consists of eighty-three proverbs with one story (both in Chinese and English) following each. They are the most popular ones in modern Chinese usage. To enhance comprehension by foreign readers, each proverb in this book appears in two forms: Chinese characters and pinyin. With the vivid illustrations matching some of the stories, readers will get a strong impression and a distinct idea of the proverbs.

In addition to displaying a panorama of ancient China and offering much knowledge concerning Chinese history, this book provides foreign readers with a chance to become acquainted with the essence of the Chinese language. By reading this book and trying to apply the proverbs in writing or everyday conversation, foreign readers will find their Chinese friends amazed and impressed, and thus will become more confident in the study of the Chinese language.

Furthermore, the English translation of this book has been proofread by Thomas Shou, and American expert who is proficient in the Chinese language, and thus it presents fluent and elegant English to readers. Therefore, it can help Chinese readers to improve their spoken and written English, enabling them to communicate with foreign friends more freely.
