Beautiful Bridge is composed of 24 lessons in two volumes, each including 12 lessons. The first two lessons focus on the teaching of pronunciation, while Lessons 3~24 are the major parts, consisting of text, new words, supplemented new words, notes, language points and language activities, etc. Texts in this set of textbooks are developed following Mike, a foreigner working and living in Beijing. Each lesson discusses one topic, encompassing aspects such as shopping, taking a taxi, making a schedule, ordering food at a restaurant, traveling, weather, sports, home furnishing, etc., which are close to life and help students to learn “survival spoken Chinese” within a short time. The 12 topics selected in the textbook include not only the social hot topics like online shopping and microblog, but also the topics that were seldom discussed and slightly professional, such as collection and photography. It also discusses the basic issues about life, with the purpose of hoping to help learners improve their expression skills in a broader scope through enhancing the informativeness and profundity of the topics.

There are two unit tests, which can be used in the middle of and at the end of the term respectively. Answers to some exercises and unit tests are provided at the end of the book.

The exercises are diverse in form, providing a basis and adequate expansion space for teachers to organize group activities in class and conduct task-based teaching. Besides the exercises in each lesson, there are two unit tests after Lesson 6 and Lesson 12 respectively. Reference answers to some exercises are provided at the end of the book.

Usage Advice

The book Sound Mandarin for English Speakers is designed for nonnative beginners to study Chinese through mastering pinyin so as to enable them to communicate in Chinese in a short period of time. The book consists of 20 units, with a brief introduction to the pinyin system of Mandarin before the first unit. A vocabulary index, grammar outline, keys and audio scripts for exercises are also included in the book. These materials will help the learners pronounce and construct basic sentences.

At the end of the book, there is a mini-dictionary providing a large amount of frequently-used vocabularies used in daily life. The book is not only for learners in class, but also ideal for self-study.
